maira kalman: hallelujah!
Maira Kalman has always been a favorite, and it looks like her Principles of Uncertainty blog is transitioning into a new narrative on American democracy, called And the Pursuit of Happiness. Today’s post about the inauguration is chock full of the sage sweetness she’s known for, but this particular image and caption gives me so much joy:
(Thanks, Erin, for sending it to me today!)
[bracket]
not sure how i missed this, but a friend told me two weeks ago about a new journal called [bracket], which describes itself as “an annual publication documenting issues overlooked yet central to our cultural milieu that have evolved out of the new disciplinary territory at the intersection of architecture, landscape, urbanism and, now, the internet.”
that’s some serious territory. thankfully each issue is to be structured around a theme, the first of which is “farming.” big debate here is whether to rework an essay that i wrote three years ago about the reclamation of agricultural space in post-industrial detroit, or to venture somewhat blindly into the fascinating territory of data centers and server farms — a topic that has been on our radar at van alen institute for the past year but is a bit too abstract and/or sensitive (depending on whom you talk to) to push as an architectural or programmatic theme.
the deadline for submissions is feb 2, 2009. for more information check out www.brkt.org. (and while you’re there, note the solid brand — with archinect and infranet lab as co-founders this venture is sure to flourish.)
